An exceptional piece of British transport history, this vintage silver-plated champagne/wine cooler ice bucket and matching tall floor stand was manufactured in 1955 by the renowned silversmiths Elkington & Co. of Birmingham. This rare set was explicitly commissioned for the British Transport Commission (BTC) Hotels, serving guests during the golden post-war era of luxury British rail travel and grand railway hotels.

Design & Provenance

Crafted to heavy-gauge "hotelware" standards, the set features a classic Art Deco-influenced bucket with robust, integrated rectangular handles. Unlike standard domestic models that utilize thin, spindly wire frames, this authentic transit-era stand is engineered with a distinctive, solid flat-plate triform base. This broad-profile geometric footprint was deliberately specified by the BTC to ensure maximum stability in high-traffic commercial environments—such as premier dining cars and prestigious venues like the Gleneagles and Midland Hotels.

Both the bucket and the flat edge of the base feature clear, authentic stamps including the official "BTC Hotels" property mark alongside the Elkington & Co. maker's marks and the specific year date code for 1955.
