A fabulous large Georgian cut glass jug with applied swan neck handles, notched spout, slice cut body and star cut base with three original stapled rivet repairs to the handle, Circa 1830.
Unlike today where we discard anything chipped or cracked, back in the 19th Century, broken household items were repaired at home or taken to a metalsmith to be brought back to life. Holes were drilled and then strengthened with metal rivets or staples to ensure that a much loved, quality item would continue down the generations. These old repairs add charm and patina and allow pieces to continue to be used successfully into 21st Century.
